FEMINISM

SOCIAL STANDARD IS KILLING OUR SOCIETY

Feminism is a range of socio-political movements and ideologies that aim to define and establish the political, economic, personal, and social equality of the sexes. Feminism holds the position that modern societies are patriarchal—they prioritize the male point of view—and that women are treated unjustly in these societies. Efforts to change this include fighting against gender stereotypes and improving educational, professional, and interpersonal opportunities and outcomes for women.

Women were prevented from conducting business without a male representative, be it father, brother, husband, legal agent, or even son. Married women could not exercise control over their own children without the permission of their husbands. Moreover, women had little or no access to education and were barred from most professions. In some parts of the world, such restrictions on women continue today.

The fight to end violence against women and girls is universal. However, gender inequality—the root cause of violence against women and girls—is particularly prevalent in regions affected by crises including conflict, military coups, displacement, climate shocks and hunger. Women and girls of ethnic minorities face multiple forms of oppression, which further reduces their power and choice. They are at increased risk of violence and face barriers to accessing support. Safety, particularly in times of crisis, is just the first step towards gender equality. Governments must be held accountable in their commitments to gender equality. Transparency concerning the amount of aid directed towards the safety, resilience and wellbeing of girls—including those also facing discrimination on the basis of their age, sexuality or ethnicity—is a vital component in making the world safer for women and girls.
